A pang of guilt rises, not for I did not write, for I had not remembered that I had not written any in this white canvas. </p><p>It is ok, if you don't live; but you should not be alive, not knowing that you are not dead, yet.</p><p>When I had promised Karthik that I would find out my English blog which used to be in blogger some years ago, I did not think it would have been five years since I had last written any in that.</p><p>My English was never great, but was not that bad, that I would hesitate writing in it. It is not a writer's block . It was just a slip of memory, not enough care that I used to write in this as well. </p><p>There are enough experiences to share with all friends who would not know (unfortuantely ) to read Tamil, and till date ( fortunately ) escaping my trysts with blogging in Tamil. I could have served them a coup de grace with my English blogs , after they had suffered enough visiting my site and trying to comprehend what the hell I had tried to say there...</p><p>A sadist motive is now more stronger in my pangs of having lost 5 years... </p><p>Well, you asked for it.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-42043892966806592402015-04-11T22:14:00.005-07:002020-10-07T02:52:40.677-07:00Educated idiots<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Nothing could be as perfect as today. A cool breeze in the morning, a cup of hot filter coffee with no burnt smell of coffee powder yet giving a strong decoction, sumptuous breakfast of Maharashtrian poha washed down with second cup of coffee...<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To add more pleasantries in the ephemeral morning, I called my friend in Kolkatta. "Kee kabor, da?" followed with all other nothings jumped to the topic of diabetics , as usual. This is what I feared the most, like the morning turning into hot , unbearable afternoon. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
" So, what is the drug you are taking now?" </div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"hmm" moaned I while trying to steer away. This topic would take the entire day. He would talk for hours on what he had, what he would... till the time, Bhabhi shouts to come for lunch. It is still 2 hours from now.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
"You could try the multi vitamins, sudhokor haan"</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
There he goes. </div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"Vitamins dada?"</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"Yes. Most of the doctors are morons. They do not know what imbalance is bothering you, man. It could be simple B complex or Ascorbic Acid.. you know what is it?" Typical Bengali trying to show off his knowledge.</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"Yeah" I was tired. Sun is rising up and getting hotter. " Vitamin C, Dada. I know these stuff. but.." Dada interrupted my tired answer.</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"You know, having an Indian gooseberry with honey.. Yes, honey.. man. It is not going to shoot up your sugar. Believe me"</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"So, how does Amla get you the Vitamin A, B Complexes and the rest of the D3, D6, E and .."</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"Never mind" he snapped. " It is all there. Honey has many vitamins"</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
Does it? I have read honey has multiple types of sugars but not D3, D6 ,E and K as of my knowledge. </div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"It is natural remedy bhai. It is all there in our system. I have stopped taking all the glimiperides, metmorphins. useless drugs, day light robbery by doctors and pharma companies"</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
I was worried that he would come to this point. Ever wondered why the newly converted naturopathy followers abhor the modern medicine? </div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"Dada" I was a bit cautious, not to sound even a bit of an advise. " You may like to consult your doctor, in both schools, before taking any drastic step".</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
"Ha. No need, man. All is well as long as you are convinced and follow the regimen. It is all in mind. You know , mind in it self.."</div><div><br /></div>
<div>
Thanks to the call drop , I got off. Not sure, if I would ever see the dada again in pink of health or in a bed trying to use a bed pan. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Whatever be the medicine, let us not pretend we do not have an issue. That arrogance of voluntary stupidity could be lethal. </div>

Recently I was in a group discussing on human relations. There was no restriction on topic. But, there has to be some take aways and they should be backed by examples.</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br />
One started off with smoking , the obvious cancer issue and the ways to control smoking at home, workplace and why gathering courage to confront a smoker if he/she violates a public rule. In the middle ,there was a query by a woman, on how to tolerate friends who have ditched her. It would have been very interesting to see how psychiatrists, mothers, teachers handle that question.<br />
<br />
Many in the group stressed on the importance of forgiving and forgetting . 'Move on' - was the message. Why unforgiving hurts was well articulated by one friend, by stressing on the psycho-somatic side effects.<br />
<br />
I begged to differ.<br />
<br />
Forgiving is not easy. It is by reiteration , emotions are kindled - for good or bad. Conscious forgetting is again a futile attempt, to erase something from brain's circuits. Again an impossibility, unless brain's circuits fail.<br />
<br />
'Let us not swim against the current' - said I. 'If a boy has outraged your modesty, get angry wtih him. Show him the doors. Let him know you were upset. '<br />
<br />
By the same token, I said to a boy who also got up on this arguement , ' if a woman unjustifiably did a character assassination on you, take her upfront. Don't take it timidly to show you are a gentleman. Nothing is important than self respect. Show her the doors , from your contacts and from your friendship. Simply she does not qualify to be your friend. '<br />
<br />
A mother smiled at this statement and said " Sir, you are making things worse. Kids cannot focus on studies , if they are filled with animosity. For their own good, let us coach them to let the bygones be bygones. Let them move on"<br />
<br />
"You have got me wrong, Madam" I said. " I am not asking them to brood over it for ever. All I am asking them is not to fake their emotions. Let them say upfront that they are upset and show their displeasure. Afterall,those who have erred need to expiate for their deeds. If they do not feel sorry, simply you are letting them to go ahead with their bloated ego. There was no friendship in the first place. It was a misjudgement by both"<br />
<br />
" No" She argued " It could be a spur of a moment, an upset mood, a physical issue that bothered him/ her. Surely , they would have regretted"<br />
<br />
" Not actually. There must be an ulterior motive to say a hurting word. If they do not find it obviously, they should dive deep. Could be a hurt ego, an insecurity.. whatever. I stand by my statement, there was no friendship in the first place. It was at best an acquintance or familiarity. Years do not matter. "<br />
<br />
" Can you prove this, Sir?" she was a bit amused. For her friendship over years mean time has made it stronger.<br />
<br />
"Sure" said I, " It took 23 years to find that what I considered a friendship was just a matter of sitting in a class together. Not even one friend came forward publicly . in support of me when my character was called in question. That does not mean I don't communicate with them. Just mentally kept them in their rightful place and have moved on.<br />
<br />
I take calls, call people, text people, but avoid meeting anyone now. I go all out to meet my real friends. Who knows, some of them may also fall out tomorrow. I too may fall from their list."<br />
<br />
When we were leaving, the lady came with teary eyes and said " I hope I am able to find out what hurt me... it is my pretention that nothing has hurt me/ forgave someone who hurt me; actually inside me, I have been feeling sad."<br />
<br />
"Yes." i said " No need to feel sorry for you either. Shed all the unqualified relations and move on".</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">My friend and I walked towards the car parking, the night's silence only broken intermittently by frogs croaking and insects buzzing. He broke the silence " Alright, people said "Move On!" and you also say " Move on!". What is the difference?"</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">As his car responded with a beep and flashing the lights for his remote, I said " They asked to feign as if nothing had happened and move on, I say, tell the world you are hurt , react and then move on. You don't have to die a hundred deaths everyday within you, for smiling outside once a day"</div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Discussions on Amazon's support
to Indic languages' ebooks requires some clarity from my side. The points
discussed mainly are Hardware
compatibility , Policy Decisions and Market Potential ( perceived).
Please see below each point and
my conversation with Amazon for better clarity. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Hardware issues:<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
When I published the book the
title was 7.83<span lang="TA" style="font-family: "Latha","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-language: TA; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> ஹெர்ட்ஸ் </span>; sub
title 7.83Hz and description was totally in Tamil. Then around 18th March, the communication
started. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Please read the following
conversation with Amazon. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The first mail from their
customer service said, </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
You've submitted your book in a
language that isn't yet supported and we have had to block it from
sale" </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
For this , I had responded on 20th March</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
It is Tamil language and I have thoroughly tested the book in Kindle
instruments, Kindle app for mac and kindle app for PC. It renders well and only
after confirmation and gaining confidence it is put up for sale. People who
downloaded it could read without problem.". I have friends who have read in Kindle old version instruments to prove this. Please
check Venkatasubramanian Ramamurthy's post. https://www.facebook.com/mannairvs/posts/10152072814737545?stream_ref=10</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
I changed the title to 7.83 Hertz
and the description in English. If this had been the reason, it should have
fixed it . But I got a reply that said,</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
" I checked your book and
noticed that you wrote the book description in English, selected the book's
language as English and the title was also in English. This is the reason why
it passed the review process when you firstly published it on our website"</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
I replied with an explanation </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
" I had given the title in
Tamil 7.83<span lang="TA" style="font-family: "Latha","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-language: TA; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> ஹெர்ட்ஸ் </span>and the
sub title as 7.83 Hz for easy search. The description was totally in Tamil. The
language selection was not allowing Tamil and hence I choose English. It was
not to mis lead any buyer. Whoever bought the book are aware that this is in
Tamil." </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
I got a reply for this yesterday
as, </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
" Although you're able to
view the content in Tamil language in your Kindle or Kindle application, it is
not applicable to all the Kindle or Kindle applications."</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
I have mentioned this in my
blog.. Do they mean to say, they would make "all the older instruments/
apps " compatible with Tamil, once they approve this language? Is there a
backwards compatibility? I have not heard of this happening. The statement " all the
Kindle, All the Kindle applications" is not a justification. Even if they
do, it is going to be " Not applicable to All the Kindle or Kindle
application". So what is the fuss? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Please note, they have not said
it was hardware/ software issue. They simply do not support. No explanation
given. It is all our assumptions that Kindle old / Kindle new do not support
and that is why Amazon is reluctant. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Policy issue;<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
They consistently maintained ,</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
"our Kindle Content Quality
team ran a review on this book and found it was published in a non-supported
language, so they decided to remove it from our website until it is published
in the language you selected." and</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
" If the language in the
content of the book doesn't match the language advertised on our website, this
is misleading to our customers which may result in a bad reading experience.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
We will be able to reactivate the
sales of your book until it is published in English or another supported
language."</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Where is the question of
misleading the clients? I have checked , convinced my self in Kindle reader,
Kindle for Ipad, Kindle for PC ( what else do they have? ). If it is their
policy not to allow un-supported
language, how do they have other Tamil e
books on their site? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Indirectly, they force you to
publish in a language they support. They are even willing to advise and guide
you to a list of translators , albeit with a caveat that they do not endorse
any one of them. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
For this I wrote,</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
"My book will be in Tamil
and am not translating because KDP is not supporting it. When I am ready for
English, I may consider KDP too for publishing." and </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
"Thanks for the suggestion
for translation services. I would rather go for sites that are sensitive and
support my language. I encourage my
friends to look for options that are more friendly to local community
sensitivities. We may lose out in being in the market leader's site, but
atleast we would not be treated differently"</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
A policy of a seller cannot force me to publish in a language of
his preference. Sorry. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Conflict in amazon's statement:<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Quoting from above "
" . If this is true, how
some Tamil e - books got into their site with the meta data " Language -
Tamil" ? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
On the same mail, they mention " If you
find any books published in a language we do not support, feel free to pop us a
mail with the ASIN, so that we'll investigate.".</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
If they are clear about the
policy, how come they do not know Tamil e books are there in their site ? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Do they have different standards
for PDF versions and .mobi versions? It is not clear from their site.
Amazon has an impeccable record of making things very clear to the users. It is not an oversight or a technical
glitch. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
From the above statements, it
looks like it is their policy not to support except a few languages. So, it
is their business decision not to support Indic language as of now. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Market potential hypothesis<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Lower market opportunity of Indic language e-book is cited as the
reason for not supporting these languages by a few of us. Amazon has never said
this overtly or intrinsically. It does not seem to be the reason as </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
1. They support languages ( like
Basque, Nordic scripts) that are not very vibrant like English, French, German,
Spanish or Portuguese. The convenience of having Latin based scripts could be a
reason for de-facto support. But it is not out of business perspective. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Compared to that Malay, Chinese (
Mandarin and Cantonese) would be a huge
opportunity. If complex scripts like Indic languages are an issue, the older
Kindle would not support the old Tamil script ( who gave that script to them?
!). The Paperwhite supports modern Tamil script and so is Kindle Fire. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
2. India is a huge mobile
consumer market . Reading habit is less compared to Western countries, but , it
could be a good market to Kindle Singles as well. Who said , books are to be
voluminous to read? Indic language support was made available in Nokia after
much criticism. Samsung was smart to catch on. It does not make sense for
Amazon to remain Latin obsessed in this country. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
3. Kindle is not aggressively
sold here unlike in US. I had explained
in my reply to Anton Prakash. Basic kindle is USD 69 in USA and the same
is available for Rs 5999 in India ( almost 99 USD?). It is not aggressive
pricing strategy. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
They sold till yesterday, their
old generation Paperwhite for Rs 7999 while the new generation is available at
the same price in US. It was just a dumping act. Not an intelligent market
tactic. They got more brickbats on their comments and review. Now, you would
see only their NEW paperwhite for sale! Some damage control act ( or they simply
exhausted the old stock). </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
By looking at their pricing,
positioning or support strategy , it is clear that they are NOT interested in a
market that is in nascent stage. May be they are not Farmers type - to sow,
water, grow the crop ; but, Hunter types - attack and devour by force when the
meal is available. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b>My observation</b> : Tamil as
a language is NOT supported officially ( any Indic language) as of now in
Amazon. It is their policy as of
now. If there are Tamil books in their
site, they are, by let ups which they want to fix. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
It is a business decision taken
at the high levels. It is not a hardware issue or a market potential analysis. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
I do not bother if they do not
support Zwahili for Indian user . Having
an office in India, and in Chennai, a policy of not supporting Tamil or
any Indic language is an abberation in their policy. This needs to be corrected
, now. </div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
When I decided to submit my book 7.83 ஹெர்ட்ஸ் ; 7.83 Hertz in Tamil, to Amazon, least had I expected that it would be rejected for the language ( I am bit uncomfortable with foul language). <br />
Publishing was smooth as I completed all formalities and uploaded the .mobi copy of my work. Got it published and a few readers had downloaded it too. It was for a price and I have not set the price low to attract many buyers. It was at par with hard copy price to be fair for all.<br />
<br />
Two days ago, I woke up with this mail from Amazon that said<br />
<br />
<i>" You've submitted your book in a language that isn't yet supported and we have had to block it from sale. Please see https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help?topicId=A9FDO0A3V0119 for a full list of currently supported languages." </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i> </i>Shocked , I surfed the page in amazon which showed the book with a alert message ,<br />
<br />
<i>"Item Under Review,</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>This book is currently unavailable because there is an issue with its description, content, or formatting.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>We are working with the publisher to fix the issue. As always, we value customer feedback."</i><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.in/7-83-Hertz-Hz-Sudhakar-Kasturi-ebook/dp/B00IP00X72">7.83 ஹெர்ட்ஸ் </a> is the link of the book. Please see for yourself.<br />
<br />
I explained in vain in a reply to Amazon that Tamil is a classic language that is still being spoken by millions in India and in other countries as well. The Cover image was clearly showing the tite in Tamil, my name in Tamil and the Book's Title had Tamil script 7.83 ஹெர்ட்ஸ் with the sub title 7.83Hz and the description was in Tamil. I awaited their response and was sure that it would be considered.<br />
<br />
Amazon's ebook submission process involves the selection of a language for publishing and Tamil was not there. I choose English as in many sites you do not see your country's name , but forced to choose "others" . I thought it was a small error from Amazon's side. Also , to be on safe side, I changed the title as 7.83 Hz as well as the description in English.<br />
<br />
Then came another mail from one Oscar, this time straightly telling me ,<br />
<br />
<i>"I checked your book and noticed that you wrote the book description in English, selected the book's language as English and the title was also in English. This is the reason why it passed the review process when you firstly published it on our website.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>However, our Kindle Content Quality team ran a review on this book and found it was published in a non-supported language, so they decided to remove it from our website until it is published in the language you selected</i>. "<br />
<br />
<br />
I was furious. What the hell is going on here? First I had given all details in Tamil and because they could not support , I had changed the description and title in English , still the cover image showing details in Tamil. Now I am being accused of cheating the readers ?<br />
<br />
Going down the mail , I found these gems.<br />
<br />
<i>"We will be able to reactivate the sales of your book until it is published in English or another supported language.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>To find all of the languages supported by KDP, please visit: https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help?topicId=200673300</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>Professional conversion translation are available to publishers seeking help with translating their work. You'll find a list of companies that specialize in these services here:"</i><br />
<br />
Why on earth should I translate my work in English or another supported language ? - because , the almighty amazon says so? and what languages they support apart from Latin based ones? Japanese. Who in Japan would read my book? Or should I try Basque? Finnish? Swedish?<br />
<br />
Then I saw this sentence that made me laugh.<br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>"If the language in the content of the book doesn't match the language advertised on our website, this is misleading to our customers which may result in a bad reading experience.' </i><br />
<br />
I had thoroughly tested the work in Kindle ( old version with 5 point button), Kindle app on Ipad with IOS7 was tested by my friends, Kindle App on PC by me many times, before I submitted to Amazon. I even bought a new IPAD Mini to be doubly sure. Many of my friends have bought the book and have given their review as well.<br />
Where is the question of bad reading experience - unless they are not happy with the content?<br />
<br />
In a reply to that guy about what had happened and giving all the facts, I wrote the following words:<br />
<i>"It is surprising to see Tamil as a language is not supported by KDP while Kindle reader and app supports. This leaves me with a dissatisfaction and disappointment.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>My book will be in Tamil and am not translating because KDP is not supporting it. When I am ready for English, I may consider KDP too for publishing."</i><br />
<br />
Today morning I got a mail from Amazon. This time one M.Raja had written. Obviously they could find someone who could understand the savage language's script. He was too polite and professional. I liked the way he had put across the issues, not without some points to make me concerned.<br />
<br />
<br />
"<i>As previously stated, at this time "Tamil" language is not supported in Kindle. Although you're able to view the content in Tamil language in your Kindle or Kindle application, it is not applicable to all the Kindle or Kindle applications. So, we remove the book from sale which may result in a bad reading experience. I'm sorry if this may cause you any inconvenience."</i><br />
<br />
I thought I was getting replies from people. This was more than auto reply mails. Have not I made clear the steps I had taken and I had personally checked the outputs?<br />
<br />
Would they make older versions of Kindle and Kindle Apps compatible with Tamil, going forward? Their old Kindle supports the old Tamil scripts ( that was stopped in late 70's) with a few bugs. How did they release that Kindle then? If the Paperwhite Kindle could support the newer Tamil version , how come they released without testing? Certainly some testing is done on support for Tamil.<br />
<br />
There was one more sentence , the <i>coup de grace </i><br />
<br />
<i>"I understand that "Tamil" is read by millions of customers in India and around the world and do confirm you that we value our international customers and do our best to satisfy them. "</i><br />
<br />
This was the best. Salutes to Amazon that they have realized that Tamil is read by people. But, their actions fail to convince me that they do their best to satisfy them.<br />
<br />
Amazon India has office in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and they say " We understand that Tamil is read by millions" and they do not support Tamil.<br />
<br />
With this, I have two options.<br />
<br />
1. Stop buying from Amazon.in<br />
2. Check with Apple, Google, Sony, Nook and Kobo whether they have any allergy for Tamil.<br />

The simple dots and curve/straight lins combination with thr myriads of combination use to fascinate me a lot (as a teenager, those who made the Kolams were the intersting objects..that is a different story)<br />When in Kochi, I read a paper in a journal about Kolam and Maths expressions. Curious though, it did not catch my attention except for the fact that solutions for some mathematic problems can be solved/ interpreted through complex designs of Egyptians, Assyrians and the South Indian Kolam. I did not know much about Kolam and so simply dropped the idea of reading it further.<br />Recently, in a geometric puzzles book, I found a pattern of kolam (3*3 matrix) used to explain the problem and how that can expand to multiple rows & columns matrix to include several smaller kolam dimension. The amazing fact was that Kolam is a symbolic representation of an expanding challenge with solution given by geometrical interpretation. In one snap, you see the whole picture of the problem and the solution itself in it. Haven't we heard that 'problem have solution in itself'?<br /><br />The logical deductions follows the use of symmetry and curves (some finite and some infinite) . Any problem solving technique involves <br />1. Breaking of the challenge into chewable pieces <br />2) Representing the problem into something more basic and understandable and <br />3) Finding solution by the representing object,s physical rules. This is based on core logic and reasoning.<br />If you see how the elderly ladies of the house approach a problem, you can see the pattern. The emotional angle is their expressive media( cut that out for a moment). Their logic works on the rules of the practical world. They use a lot of similies and comparisons for a solution. They 'picturize' the problem mentally and offer solution based on historical data. I now believe that credit goes to their Kolam and carnaric music.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-61537104762563613432010-02-05T12:55:00.001-08:002010-02-08T01:33:30.046-08:00W(hy)ah Taj?<!-- Converted from text/plain format --> <P><FONT SIZE=2>W(hy)ah Taj?<br /> I love Taj. Not wrong by a large extent… it IS INDEED 21 years. How come I could not meet any of them? Puzzled as I was always , I asked the same boring question back to me. This time, it was a bit stronger and stirred me as well. Not sure what triggered. Not that I care now.<br /><br /> <br />“Retrospection is not regurgiation” reminded someone from some corner of my mind. True. Most of the time, we intent to do an retrospection and we look back with some emotional bias that spoils the scerenity of retrospection. Cautiously, I tried to retrospect this time. No pleasant/unpleasant memories... just a retrospection and a tryst to find them again.<br /><br />First came Cyriac . Google is something that you can use for almost anything you have lost – including the car keys and the beautiful girl who boarded the non-descript townbus in an equially non descript town. Anyone is traceable at any time.<br /><br /> No one can say that they did not have their 15 seconds of fame in the digitized world. Got the University address first, tracked and got a phone number of Nandakumar, the super senior who surprisingly remembered me even after these many years. He promised to send Cyriac’s cell number by SMS. Was not my belief that I would not be remembered just after these 2 years except for my asthmatic episodes and horrible Malayalam?<br /><br />I awaited patiently.. not more than 10 minutes I could hold on. Sent him a nice message on his cell and gently reminded him to send the phone number. If I could wait for 24 years , could not I wait for another 24 minutes? No, I chided myself. Sometimes, there are no fairer games – especially when it mattered friends. Came in the sms atlast. I thanked him tersely on a reply message and prepared my self for giving sheer surprise calls to all the long last friends. <br /><br />With a grin on my face and imagining how the faces would be on the otherside of the phone, first , I plugged in my cell phone in the charger. The old Nokia E 61 is as good as a landline for me with a constant need of charging. Anyway , it served it’s purpose today , when Cyriac ansered on the other side with utter confusion over the name “ Sudhakaran” as the caller. Fyriace, ninde Folid Ftate Fyffif engane undu? , got him to the memory lane. The sheer laugh and total loss for words were all that needed for us to get started .<br /><br /> Sometimes words are impediments in a conversation. To have a true conversation, you need not think coheretnly, put the right words in a logical sequence, conditiion that with your consciousness of the society acceptance on the expressions and words.. All these miliseconds delay in arranging words are too much for minds and hearts struggling to burst out and enjoy the sheer moment of happiness – of getting something long last. <br /><br />“Talk slowly and in medium pitch” said my boss in a softskill development workshop some time ago in Singapore. He raised this point again and re-instated, “You should not offend the audience with your expressions and body language which is very subliime and potentially lethal than words”. For once, I did not care. I know the audience. It was not Cyriac. It was ME. I enjoyed the conversation and I enjoyed all the stammering and staggering and incoherent utterings of me and that of Cyriac. Who cares what we talked? It was talking that mattered. <br /><br />After 20 minutes , we became aware of what the hell we were talking. The sheer awareness brought in the consciousness and our talks became more or less “normal”. He volunteered to send the ppt with all the contact information except a few –just pulling my legs again. What he did not know was that I had already fallen!<br />When I was done with the phone, I realized the unfinished ppt and the demo scripts with workflows in the new Virtual Machine. Damn… deadline is Monday. Got to my feet on work again. Monday would be the D-day. <br /><br />Atlast got the mail from Cyriac with the ppt around 8 PM Sunday. Will write about each call in coming days.. Just to bore you all and make you configure the Spam mail settings to accommodate my email id in there. Neverthless, the assault would continue.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-65959493544690730772009-03-03T08:06:00.000-08:002009-03-03T08:30:20.349-08:00Educated idiots"Well, you can jump out- if you want to.. " The last words spoken to a mother of two who leaped out of 14th floor two weeks ago in a Mumbai suburb. She was found in a pool of blood by the apartment security - too late for any first aid . She had left two kids who could not believe that their mother was gone - forever. This was the news in the 4th page in the Hindustan Times some days ago. I could think of it on my way to HongKong - as I put aside the headphones on the JetAirways whose noisy engines prevented me from getting engrossed in a old "Hope" serial. <br />Young Lady... Hope you are resting in peace. <br />I don't know what the quarrel was. I don't care either. It is all about sense and sensibility. What kind of husband you had had for the past 11 years? Why simply you could not walk away with the kids? <br />Sure, you have the social pressure of rearing two kids alone.. and have to tolerate the ugly passes that men make at times , when they know you are alone. But, Mumbai society does not have time to think about you. Neither you had time to think about yourself/ your kids before you jumped out. <br /><br />How the kids would receive your body soaked in blood? Could you not feel the younger one screaming at your feet? Will you wake him again tomorrow morning with a glass of hot milk? Who will fix his favorite breakfast?<br /><br />I am not blaming you squarely.. your husband is equally a partner in the crime. May be his more criminal than you; but the fact is your ( both ) irresponsibility has orphaned two kids. Who and when would answer that? <br /><br />I see lot more stress in the Mumbai life.. blame it on the globalization and the BPO call centres who work 24/7. You were working in a BPO.. didn't you? Maybe , someday, I would ponder about your colleague's mental health and jot a few words. But, for now, I reserve my sympathies for your kids. <br />One phone call to a friend, one shriek on your husband, one bang on the door would have evaporated your anger/ frustration and prevented this horrible act. What stress you have gone through in life before? Have you ever stayed for 3 days without food while in college? Have you ever dropped out of an elite course just because you could not fund that?... I know some guys who have gone through all these and yet alive till today ... I can show one in my mirror. <br />It is not about boasting.. it is about sharing and commitment and resolution to fight back. May be one day , we need to talk about life more than the etiquette of taking a call from San Jose, we need to talk more about positive energy than positrons ; we need to discuss more about fighting back for life than bandwidth allocation. Our colleges produce more intelligent robots than wiser men and women.<br /><br />I sound too much of a priest in a Sunday Sermon. May be it is time to get some sleep.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-26140757430822173832008-09-10T03:09:00.000-07:002008-09-10T03:32:31.956-07:00IS Hindi the National Language of India?I live in Mumbai - a pot- pourri of multi-cultural , multi-ethnic and multi-linguistic populace. Local politicians try their hands on whipping the old horses of regionalism, liguistic chauvinism occasionally; but, the city has grown and matured beyond all these trivia.<br /><br />The recent incidence of an actress Jaya Bachchan calling herself an " UP wala" ( North Indian) and she does not know the local tongue Marathi was not just viewed as a casual remark by the local politicians. Had it been a mere provocation and responded well by a local politician, I would not have bothered to write this - especially after such a long time.<br /><br />There has always been a story that Hindi is the National Language of India. This is found in the school books, some well recognized websites as well. Many people have told as if it is a fact like Sun Rises In the East. <br /><br />I could not find any substantiating evidence ( officially ) for this statement. The Indian Constitution ( article 343) merely states that Hindi in the Devanagari script is the official language of Union Government. Official language is different from the National language. At the national level , a few have been accepted and that will be respected in all the states - regardless of the State's whims. For example, the National Anthem is in Bengali . A Tamilian, even if he cannot understand a word of it, has to sing the anthem and respect that. He cannot say that it is not in his mother tongue. So is the case with National Symbols like Ashoka Chakra , national bird, animal , game etc. <br />But, the constitution does not speak of a National language. It merely talks of the official languages for the Central Government ( English and Hindi) and the State Governments ( States can take their own decision for it's official language).<br /><br />From where the fallacy of Hindi as a National Language has come?<br /><br />It could be a fallout of a Hindi Propaganda to make the non-Hindi speaking to embrace Hindi as a communication medium or a popular belief out of the extensive use of Hindi in the Central Government's communications and it's control over the mass media like TV and Radio till the days of globalization. <br />Whatever the cause, Indians are forced to believe a false statement of a National Language. I am not against Hindi. At the same time, I am not for a statement to make everyone to believe that Hindi is the national language. Leave the decision of learning a language to the common man. He would take what is required for him. If he is an Assamese going to Tamil Nadu, he does not need to learn Hindi. English and Tamil will do.<br /><br />We don't need a National Language - even by false propaganda.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-1147600718224825002006-05-14T02:57:00.000-07:002006-05-14T02:58:38.240-07:00Shame on the UniformThe real face of the Mumbai Police has come to the limelight again yesterday in Azad Maidan . No amount of follies by the Police department can justify the blasphemous acts they have done.<br /><br />All started with the brutal and uncivilized force that the police used to clear the protesting students out of Azad maidan. In the name of providing security to the masses, the police has shown utter disrespect to the democracy and the silent protestors. <br /><br />Whatever be the cause of protest- the police should have showed that they are a disciplined force first. If not what is the difference between them and the thugs on the streets? <br /><br />I got the shock of my life when the media shows the police beating the medical students - who were protesting silently ( They were not creating any nuisance to the public or damaged any property - unlike many other protests and processions which Mumbai is used to ), the Police Commissioner A.N.Roy had denied the lathi charges. <br /><br />As an eminent doctor from IMA has commented " Either he is blind or he is a blatant liar". Is it needed for a Police Commissioner to be excoriated like this in public? Why he could not discharge his duties unbiased? Is there any pressure from the political corridors to keep an upper hand on those protesting against quota? Is he not to be a person - away from political parties to discharge his duties? Given this mess, Is he not the first person to be fired out of the force?<br /><br />There were female protestors in the group. Not a single female constable was there to regulate the situation. All these female students were dragged and beaten by the thugs in uniform. I have no words to call them as police constables. There were guys NOT IN UNIFORM, but beat the protestors with lathi. Who were they? Why they were not in uniform? To which force they belong? Any answers , Mr.Roy?<br />How come , those who ordered the lathicharge did not see that the women in the group are to be handled by women? Why do they have a women wing in their force? The students were beaten and were detained for 4 hours -no reason given. Later, in the night they were released "without " any protection. Can they just tell, where the female students would go in this insecure Mumbai- where the police cannot even be trusted?Will they do, for their own children? <br /><br />What can you expect from a police force which rapes the women in the police chowkies? Today it is the medical students.. tomorrow it can be anybody - you , me , our brothers and sisters. <br /><br />Are we having a tyrant like General Dyer as the police chief ? Is this a police or a force trained for political suppressions?<br /><br />Where is the Chief Minister? He has not spoken a single word about this incident. <br /><br />The IMA has given 24 hours to the government to respond . It is high time for the Governor and the Chief Minister to sense the gravity of the situation and respond.<br /><br />I am ashamed that I still live in this city - where the rules are twisted for political gains, where there is no respect for democracy, where there is no rule of law. <br /><br />Is there any taker for a family of three to move in- as refugees?<br /><br />disillusioned,<br />K.SudhakarUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-1136085083714617482005-12-31T18:58:00.000-08:002005-12-31T19:11:23.730-08:00New Year ResolutionsWISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!<br /><br />Sending greetings by email, mobile and all possible communication media kept me busy for half a day ( from 31st night to 1st morning). Searching through the phone numbers in 05 diary, trying to relate the number to the name ( how many Kannans I have to deal with ?) , 'Oh , sorry, This used tobe my friend's number six months ago' - excuses for those lazy chums who have not updated their new numbers... fun and exhilarating.<br /><br />Perai Srini has taken a new year resolution-- visit the temple and don't offer in Hundi. He has his reasons for it. I have been asked by my wife several years to take a resolution. which I cannot fulfil. Probably, I should tell her to take a resolution - not to ask me to take one. That too will be a resolution for me - knowing her intransigence.<br /><br />One list in Hindustan Times captured my attention. Just a simple list. Nice to have them. It will be very nice to execute as well. One I liked " DO SOMETHING GOOD TODAY TO OTHERS WHOM YOU DON"T KNOW." This brings back a memory of a timely help in Mysore I received by one pastor on my way from Kochi. Will write about that one day.<br /><br />One thing for sure. A resolve to take a resolution itself is half job done. Perhaps the execution has to do a lot with the commitment and determination. Resolutions are good to imbue the spirit of getting orderliness out of chaos. It is like getting the house cleaned once an year - in the name of festivals. As long as the memoirs and habbits don't give a hangover of last year, New Year resolutions are fine. Whatever that be.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-1135435624927084162005-12-24T06:47:00.000-08:002005-12-24T06:54:10.473-08:00Tsunamika - messenger of Peace , Love and HopeTsunami hit one year ago -exactly. Lives were lost in numbers. Families decimated and entire villages wiped out. No word would be sufficient to cover the depth of devastation it had brought to families who had survivors.<br />One thing stood out... The human values of support and optimism. Auroville had worked with the fisherwomen . Out of the unfathomable sadness and<br />despair, the energy of keeping the world alive emerged. It was so strong and<br />so voluntary, it had spread it's wings across the world as a messenger of<br />humanity and love - like the major religions who took ages to spread the<br />message.<br />The symbol of the spirit is a doll Tsunamika. It is a rag doll made of wasteclothes and small items found in houses. The people get Tsunamika with the<br />passion and love and give it to other fellow men to spread the message<br />"Peace and Love". In return, one can give money to the people who make the<br />dolls - which is purely voluntary. No fixed limits of sum is advocated.<br />Anything out of love is accepted. What can be the best way to spread Love<br />and Peace in the world which cannot be benchmarked with money?<br />You can have a look at the <a href="http://www.tsunamika.com">www.Tsunamika.com </a>and decide what you want to do - as a human.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-1135266737794137342005-12-22T07:43:00.000-08:002005-12-24T00:53:33.953-08:00Plastic BanThere was such a hue and cry after the "day of deluge" in Mumbai to ban the plastic. Society ,cutting across all social and political barriers welcomed this decision. People had even prepared to move in the market with their own bags. <br />Just then, the curse of democracy prevailed. Anyone can challenge any damn thing here. Political pressure came heavily on the decision makers. The delay in implementation of the ban was a clear indication.. This time too, this is going to die. <br />It is now official. The decision on the ban is deferred. You can see the celebration of the dirt on the road side. Ugly colored thin plastic bags inflated in the dusty winds fly happily on the roadside corners and decorate the gutters. <br />Who has ever said that slum dwellers would not comply with laws if the plastic ban comes to effect? Ask a slum dweller. He would tell a different story. No way to carry the things to his home. That is logistics.. not to do with the convenience of plastic. They are also aware of it's ugly side. But, there is no alternative.<br />The NGOs need to look at this problem from a different paradigm. Instead of just focussing on Plastic ban, let them try to educate people to move away from plastic and use the alternate sources of carry bags. This will be more pragmatic as the plastic lobby is as strong as the cigarette lobby. No money is sufficient to fight with them. Socially ostracize the habbit .. that would work.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-1135131222157113992005-12-20T18:12:00.000-08:002020-10-07T02:49:07.794-07:00Killing The CatsTwelve tigers were killed in Rathambore in two years. <div><br /><div>Twelve?.. It could be much more. </div><div><br /></div><div>What is more pitiable is the ignorance of what is being wiped out. The community which revers the Tiger as the seat of Godess Durga , mercilessly kills it for some Green bucks.
In Nagpur, a villager simply poisoned a tiger in a personal vendetta. It killed his cow. </div><div><br /></div><div> The difference between killing for survival and killing to show who is the mightier is not understood by that poor man, despite the harmonious living the villagers had with the wild beasts for ages.
Just wishing that the tribals and villagers in the borders of jungles know how to live there, is disasterous. Probably they don't know anymyore.</div><div><br /></div><div>We have poisoned the villagers enough with the ugly display of new found wealths in media. It is quite natural for a man to be greedy. What he would turn to.. when he can get more money for just killing a beast which endangers his livelyhood? </div><div><br /></div><div> A proper media campaign in these areas is a must. NGOs who can take this excercise can be helped by those who have expertise in dealing with tribals.
If we fail to do immediately, probably one more news you would read very soon " Tigers Extinct in India".</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20037008.post-1135094085831174902005-12-20T07:32:00.000-08:002005-12-20T07:56:17.933-08:00Satellite Radio- a pain relieverMore Sting Operations... more exposures of corrupt politicians on video.. More of them gobbling the airtime of Breaking News on prime time news channels. Surfeited and bloated with the sickening news , I just turn off the TV and turn on the satellite radio. Bereft of advertisements on new and improved sanitary napkins, the radio is a solace many a times.<br /><br />I am not an avid radio listener. Neither am I a music afficanado. I cannot even tell a symphony from an opera. Rocks and country are fine for me for 5 minutes or so max.. Drifting a lot, my bad habbit of switching channels in a TV , just follows happily in the satellite radio routine too. The scanning addiction is one way a blessing in disguise.. I tumble across on nice programs in different channels which suddenly captures the mood perfectly. <br /> Amore is a good channel to get famiarized. The India specific (?) channels of regional languages and classical music channels are at best ,a compromise , appealing to the surface level expectations of an average music afficianado. Still, something is different in these channels. The quality of delivery/ absence of advertisements/ selection of songs ...? dont know for sure. May be a mix of all. <br />If I go with my experience of Tamil channel, I can extrapolate that all regional channels should be utter disappointments to those who want something different from the shreiking FM channels. Full of banal and vapid programs,they do not appeal me at all. My car is always driven in absolute silence when I dont have the selected cassetes or CDs. FM is turned ON to check your time and adjust my watch.<br />Perhaps, FM has to be that way to keep your expectations unfulfilled sothat they just remain expectations. The satellite radio can relieve the pain you get by listening all these noises of FM.<br />Try this paracetamol /ibuprofen. Just see that you dont get acidity.<br />Happy listeningUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0
